Context Sources
Uploads
Uploads are the fastest way to give the Nomic agent context — and the only ingest path on the Individual plan. Drop files directly into a conversation or upload them to Files for persistent reuse across sessions.
Uploading in a Conversation
You can attach files and images directly in the conversation input bar:
- Click the + button in the input bar, or drag and drop files onto the conversation
- Select one or more files from your computer
- Ask your question — Nomic will use the attached files as context for that conversation
Files uploaded this way stay with the conversation: they appear in the Session folder of the conversation's file panel, not in My Uploads. Anyone you share the conversation with can view them. To keep a file beyond the conversation, right-click it and choose Move, or use Move files on the Session row to move them all. Moves default to the conversation's project folder when it has one. When you delete a conversation that has uploads, you can choose to move them or delete them with it.
Images you paste, drop, or attach to a message are saved to the conversation's Session folder too, so they follow the same sharing and move rules.
Uploading to Files
Upload files to Files to make them persistently available:
- Go to Files in the sidebar
- Click Upload and choose File upload or Folder upload, or drag and drop directly
- Uploaded files appear in your file list and can be attached to any future conversation
Files uploaded to Files can be organized into folders and attached to Projects.
My Uploads
When you upload files through the Files view, they are stored in your My Uploads folder. Files uploaded in a conversation go to that conversation's Session folder instead.
- Private by default — My Uploads is personal to your account and not visible to other users
- Cannot be moved or renamed — The My Uploads folder is a fixed location in your file list
- No inbound moves — Files and folders from other locations (such as integrations) cannot be moved into My Uploads. The exception is files uploaded in a conversation
Uploading to a Project
You can upload files directly into a Project:
- Open the Project and go to Files
- Select Add files, then choose File upload or Folder upload (or drag and drop files into the file list)
- The uploaded files are owned by the project and available to its conversations and members (Business and Enterprise)
You can also use Add files → Move from Drive to make existing Drive files part of the project, or Link files from Drive to show files in the project without moving them from their original location.
Supported File Types
Uploads support the same file types as the rest of the platform:
- Microsoft Word (
.doc,.docx,.docm,.dotx,.dotm) - Microsoft Excel (
.xls,.xlsx,.xlsm,.xltx,.xltm) - Microsoft PowerPoint (
.ppt,.pptx,.pptm,.potx,.potm) - Images (
.png,.jpg,.jpeg,.webp,.gif) - BIM models (
.ifc,.ifczip) - AutoCAD drawings (
.dwg,.dxf)
See Files — Supported File Types for the full list.
Empty files are rejected during upload. Nomic also keeps the original file-type extension intact after upload, so rename the file locally and upload it again if the extension is wrong.
PDFs and many legacy Office documents auto-index after upload. Open XML Word or PowerPoint files such as .docx and .pptx, spreadsheets, BIM models, and CAD drawings may need explicit indexing or viewer preparation depending on how you use them. See Files — Indexing for details.
IFC and IFCZIP uploads can be opened in the BIM viewer and queried by the Nomic agent. See BIM Model Intelligence for format limits and first-use preparation behavior.
DWG uploads open in the CAD viewer and are extracted so the Nomic agent can query layers, blocks, attributes, and labels. DXF opens in the viewer only. See CAD Drawings for limits and what you can ask.
When to Use Uploads vs. Integrations
| Scenario | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| One-off question about a specific document | Upload directly in the conversation |
| Files you'll reference repeatedly | Upload to Files |
| Team working on a shared set of documents | Upload to a Project |
| Ongoing sync or project import from SharePoint, Egnyte, Autodesk Forma, Bentley, ProjectSight, or Fieldwire | Set up an integration |
